For my first time in Phuket, Thailand, I decided to stay in a trusty Hyatt hotel. After arriving at the Phuket airport, I was herded into a cab and paid about 1400 baht (about $41 USD) for a 45 minute drive to the hotel. Given the distance of the airport from the Hyatt, which is in somewhat of a remote location by itself, getting into a taxi was the only way to go. The Hyatt Regency Phuket is located on the eastern shore of Phuket Island, Thailand. It is in the area known as Kamala. However, the hotel is situated by itself with residential roads around it. The hotel is a 5 minutes drive from old Kamala town and Kamala Beach, but about 10-15 minutes drive to Patong Beach.
The Hyatt Regency has a half-hourly free shuttle that takes you to Kamala town/beach to walk around and a hourly shuttle to Patong. Kamala can be described as a much more local and quiet town while Patong would be the more westernized and touristy strip area. Whereas the former would be perfect to just relax and enjoy the serene ocean air, the latter offers relaxing beach time in addition to bars, shopping, restaurants, hostels, and a lot more people.
