Cheap Local Food in Chiang Mai, Thailand

While I unfortunately was not able to find the name of the restaurant, right next to my hostel in Chiang Mai was a fairly local restaurant with delicious food for phenomenally cheap prices. This made me realize how affordable Chiang Mai is for a foreign traveler. Most of these dishes were about 50 baht each, which is about $1.50 USD!

Chicken Khao Sol

Chicken Khao Soi – A curry based soup with crispy noodles, flat noodles, chicken drumstick, cilantro, and coconut milk

The star of this meal splurge is definitely the Chicken Khao Soi. Khao Soi is a must-have in Chiang Mai as it is a Burmese-influenced dish found in northern Laos and northern Thailand. Traditionally, Khao Soi which roughly translates to “cut rice” are rice noodles made by having the dough is stretched out and steamed over boiling water before being cut up by scissors.

The Northern Thailand variation is a soup-like dish made with a mix of deep-fried crispy egg noodles and boiled egg noodles, pickled cabbage, shallots, lime, ground chili, meat, and a yellow coconut milk -based curry. it is a common street dish in northern Thailand and is absolutely delicious!

Afterwards, I tried another curry noodle soup with thinner rice noodles, fried tofu, eggs, mushroom, and pork. This curry dish was also coconut milk heavy and was extremely fragrant with spices.

Beef Vermicelli Soup

Deciding to switch it up a little bit, I ordered a non-curry noodle soup. This was served with beef innards, beef balls, tripe, beef tongue, and vermicelli noodles in a much lighter beef soup. The beef broth was refreshing after all the curry dishes and carried a onion and lime taste.

Mango Sticky Rice

Finally, the best Thai dessert in my opinion is the Mango Sticky rice. Just a great juxtaposition of flavors with the mango, rice, rice crackers, and sweet condensed milk combined together into a very pleasing bite!

While I did not exactly record the name of this restaurant, I’m pretty certain this kind of delicious street noodle food can be picked up throughout Chiang Mai with the same delicious quality!
